Dr. Paterne Agre is a Molecular Breeding and Bioinformatics Scientist at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria, and Visiting Scientist at the Salk Institute, La Jolla, San Diego, California, US, where he leads and supports genomic innovation for yam improvement. His research integrates genomics and transcriptomics to accelerate trait discovery and deployment in root and tuber crops, with a strong focus on disease resistance, plant architecture, and tuber quality.
He has played a central role in developing the yam pangenome, mid-density genotyping platforms, diagnostic markers for variety tracking, genomic selection (GS), genomic prediction of cross performance (GPCP), and functional transcriptomic resources for yam breeding. Dr. Agre is actively engaged in international collaborations across Africa, Europe, America, and is deeply committed to capacity building in molecular breeding and bioinformatics.
In recognition of his scientific contributions, Dr. Agre received the AGBT Agriculture Award (2024, Orlando, USA) and the ISTRC Award for Outstanding Yam Research (2025). He has authored and co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and serves as a board member and guest editor for leading journals, including BMC Plant Biology.
