Dr. T. Makeshkumar is a distinguished scientist with 33 years of experience in tuber crop research, including 29 years at ICAR-CTCRI. His career is marked by pioneering achievements, notably conducting India's first transgenic work on plant virus resistance during his Ph.D. , which earned him the ICAR-Jawaharlal Nehru Award. Over three decades, he has published 66 research papers and 10 book chapters , while presenting his findings at 80 international and national conferences. His technical expertise spans the development of advanced diagnostic tools like ELISA, PCR, and lateral flow devices , as well as the release of four cassava mosaic disease-resistant cultivars and two high-starch varieties. Dr. Makeshkumar has successfully managed 20 research projects, securing over Rs. 6 crores in external funding as a Principal Investigator , and has been instrumental in establishing critical infrastructure such as transgenic and disease diagnostic laboratories.
A dedicated mentor and academic leader, he has guided four Ph.D. and 32 postgraduate students , and currently serves as the Senior Editor for the Indian Phytopathology journal. His global reputation as an expert in cassava mosaic disease led to an invitation to Cambodia in 2018 to assist in regional disease management strategies. Recognized as a Fellow of both the Indian Phytopathological Society and the Indian Virological Society , his work continues to advance integrated disease management through tissue culture, genome editing, and the production of virus-free planting materials. Beyond his research, he has served as a Course Director for national training programs and remains an active reviewer for numerous high-impact international journals.
